Hello dear friends!

As the end of the first semester at Uni is coming, I feel it necessary to take stock of my progress in Academic Writing English classes. First of all, I’d like to thank my Academic Writing English teacher for her will to make our lessons interesting, she perfectly met the challenge. I want to point out some topics that I found really beneficial. Firstly, I enjoyed the lesson when we were to read about a specific technique of word memorizing, because as a linguist I do learn lots of new words and such techniques are really helpful. Secondly, the discussion of different types of essay made me understand better the structure of each type. As for the things I didn’t like, well, the computer, I worked with during the class, was always having some bugs, and I made a great effort to do my assignment.

In the forthcoming year, I ‘d love to focus on writing formal letters such as application for a job, business correspondence. I also consider rules of punctuation, orthography to be worth discussing, because these are the rules that should be often brushed up. I hope we will have a special class of formal lexis, because, as far as I am concerned, formal style is different to informal one, and we are as linguists must be able to differentiate them.

All in all, I look forward to sharing my opinion on different topics, hope you will find my blog a somewhat wonderful.

Today I will tell you about the article 'Seven ways to keep exercising in the cold, dark winter months' written by Amy Sedghi is devoted to the discussion of doing sports in winter time

(https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/dec/03/seven-ways-to-keep-exercising-in-the-cold-dark-winter-months)they say that winter is an obstacle for doing regular exercises, because of low temperatures and the risk to getting ill. But is it really so?

    To persuade us, the author draws our attention to the tips that seem to work.   Firstly, she says about the importance of setting a goal, because the lack of motivation does not lead to any progress. Later on she refers to Dr Joe Costello to prove that doing sports together with your friends motivates you not to give up. She also emphasizes that  proper winter clothes are one of the most important aspects that require consideration. Further, the author suggests making your regular exercises various in order for you not to get bored with doing one and the same action. In addition, she highly recommends to keep track of your exercises, she writes it will help you visualize how much you have already done. She also makes the reader convinced that fitness at home is as good as training outside. The last aspect makes everybody  leave no excuses for missing the trainings because of bad weather. Finally ,in the article there was said that having a rest is essential for tissue repair. The author doesn't make a conclusion, because his only purpose was to provide the reader with some tips on the above-mentioned topic. Amy Sedghi leaves the reader alone to make his own conclusions and probably reconsider his point of view on doing sports in winter time.

Today I want to share my word-learning experience with you. At our Academic English class we underwent an experiment where every student had to choose an app that woud contribute to better word memorizing. I 've chose an app called Words 2  that is completely useless to my mind. It was so inconvenient to play with unknown people the game which is so strange... There was a kind of a crossword where two players had to fill the words. I 'm not a crossword passionate solver ,that is why the game seemed to be  boring. I've learnt five new words with the help of this game. I must admit that I've already found my own way for the best word-memorising. I make some flashcards ,and look the words up in the dictionaties that provide the contexts of their usage. No apps can substitute this method!

Oxford dictionary explains all the words in English clearly,it also has a pronounciation and phrase columns .In addition ,there is an etimological  reference to each word.It is my favourite dictionary because everything is quite simple

Multitran is another helpful Russian-English dictionary.All the Russian learners of English may find it usefull ,because it contains  fields of usafe for every word .I use it when English explanation of a word confuses me .

 The Free Dictionary is a key to all set expressions understanding.Here you will find all the idioms that ever existed in the English or American language .I  use it when I deal with  English-Russian translation of idioms or proverbs

Sometimes  the translation is so difficult to make that the only way to avoid misinterpetation is  looking  a collocation up in Context Reverso .

    There are  193 countries on the Earth ,so that each country's authority has to work out a system that provides peaceful way of living for every other country.But how is it possible without communication in one and the same language?There is a certain dispute on whether language spoken worldwide would lead to better international relations

    During Academic English class my friends and I discussed it thoroughly and learned that it would be better if languages differ.Firstly,the are about 200 countries in the world and if you take into account that each of them has its own history that formed people's set of mind,it will get clear that if one country substitutes its native language for another in order to aquire better international relations ,it will just demolish the whole histoty and roots.Secondly ,all the professions connnected with linguistics will dissappear as though something related to the Ancient World.Moreover a lot of people  will lose their jobs,because their knowledge will be no longer in demand ,it will get just useless.Consequently,it will lead to an increasing  rate of unemployment.Does it seem to improve the quality of our lives?

     On the contrary ,other groupmates consider only positive changes about  it.One of the main problems of having different languages is cultural misunderstanding.For instance ,when I was in China ,a lot of people took pictures with me ,being unready to the greatest possible extent ;they touched my hair saying 太漂亮 which means "very beautiful ",so that after going outside in China ,I was afraid to lose my beuatiful hair.Surprisingly ,it turned out that they made photos with me ,because I have European appearance and all the Europeans seem to be attractive for  the Chinese .Besides,when they see something they cannnot help admiring ,they touch it ,hoping to aquire the same feature;that is why they touched my thick hair.That is an example of how important it is to take into consideratiom other nationality's world view.But if we had one language ,one and the same structural way of expressing our thoughts ,we won't come across such incidents,will we?By the way,there is one more advantage-if we have one language ,we will not have to spend time on studying it !And as a great bonus ,you will be able to communicate with any man you want ,because there will be a mutual language

   Anyway ,as Antointe de Saint-Exupery once said "Language is the source of misunderstanding,but these misunderstandings and conflicts can occur both in linguistically diverse and homogeneous areas".Language is not the reason of cultural misunderstanding ,there are people who are reluctant to learn some features and perception piculiarities of other nationalities.In addition , to object the second argument,studying a new language perfectly broadens the mind of a learner ;so that it is worth spending time on it .

   All in all,although some people are convinced that one language will make our world better ,I strongly believe that each country has a right to save own roots and history that are so important for language understanding .As Benjamin Lee Whorf said:"The language is a mirror of culture and a shaper of our mentality"If there is one language the whole world of different cultures ,traditions and world views will disappear

  Today I was asked to read some stories about sexual assault as a part of my Uni classes.I was greately surprised at the amount of victims's stories.I have found one that struck me the most and I want to share it with you (https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/2017/12/11/metoo-stories-sexual-assault-you-havent-heard/924437001/_)
  Michele ,who is 36 years now has a husband and a son .She was raped in her youth under the state of wooziness.I consider her to be  quite a strong person ,because judging by the stories of other women ,it is psychologically hard to have any relationships with other sex after a harassment .Fortunately ,she overcame it and managed to get married .I think this story encourages women ,who once experienced the same ,it gives them hope in fair future.
  This problem is very popular among all the youths.When it happens it is difficult to share  even with the nearest .The only thing we can do is encourage social campaign of help in such situations,because victims need to know they will not be under that anymore,they will find a good husband,they will be happy,they will not be raped.

     Recently  I was given a homework to read a rather challenging article about sexual harassment at work in France ("French flirt at work" by Brigitte Janin) ,so that today I am going to share with all of you my thoughts on this issue.
      Firstly,I consider having an affair with a colleague or a boss to be not a bad idea ,if there is some evidence of real feelings to each other.To my mind,all colleagues and bosses are simple people who can love deeply and truely,notwithstanding their status at work .But forcing somebody to having sex against the will ,using gender superiority is absolutely another thing that should not be concerned as any kind of serious relationship.It is humiliation  ,in fact.Some people say that there is nothing bad if some colleague touches your back when you are dressed seductively.In their point of view ,it  is  your fault ,your way of showing that you are ready for having some fun.I assume that in such justifications dress-code shoud be worked out ,because "seductive appearence "is quite an objective notion.I think that shoulders and hands are the only parts of a female body that colleagues are allowed to touch.
       Brigitte Janin made her colleagues remove some photos ,calendars and other things that provoked women to sex at work .She was the only woman in men's department and clearly felt uneasy in such atmosphere.I understand  Brigitte' urge to get rid of the things somehow related to sex ,because she worked there as an aerodynamics engineer,not as a floozy.As I have alredy siad a seductive dress is a very objective thing,it is in man's mind to consider somebody's appearance seductive ,so if one certain man wants a woman, he can be seduced by simple trousers and a shirt. I guess the problem is in man's perception of a woman he wants.Some nude calendars make the matters worse.To tell the truth ,a woman should be always aware of her clothing ,because any vulgar skirt or tights may be seen as a signal to be ready for some new infatuations.
        Can men be harassed by women?No,I guess .I personally do not know any woman who has so odd intentions towards men.May be there some exceptions....some weird...psychologically unstable women..
Fortunately,I have never been under such conditions ,and I will do my best not to find myself under them.

  From my point of view ,this tool is a new
discovery that soon will gain a great popularity among all the crammers like me.I have got a new method that will surely save my time on learning by heart
